Glicine looks onto the inner courtyard, where in spring the wisteria climbs right up to the windowsill. The chestnut beams are the original nineteenth-century ones, the floor is hexagonal terracotta and the made-to-measure headboard is the colour of our hydrangeas.
It is a snug, quiet room: the traffic of Via Cavour never reaches it. The queen bed has a pocket-sprung mattress and washed linen sheets, and there is a carafe of fresh water on the bedside table, refilled every day.
